Sermon Title: The Journey to Bethlehem: Favored by God
Theme:
This is the first sermon in a series based on Adam Hamilton’s book, “The Journey: Walking the Road to Bethlehem.” The Christmas story is a familiar one, maybe too familiar. Even folks who have never stepped foot in a church know something about the story. They have heard about the shepherds and the angels and the baby in the manger. But sometimes, especially for us church folks, the story becomes so familiar that we miss out on the big ideas and the small but important details that are found in it.
This sermon focuses on the details in the beginning of the story. The town of Nazareth that Jesus called home. And the humbleness and faithfulness of Joseph and Mary, the ones chosen to bring the Messiah into the world. We will spend some time looking at the history and theology of this time and place and try understand what it says about whom God is and who we are.
